Module 2.6
Decision-making under pressure

SAR operations require fast, consequential decisions — often with incomplete information, in difficult conditions, with lives at stake. Knowledge of procedures matters, but what matters more is being able to apply that knowledge when it counts.

This module puts you in command. You'll work through realistic scenarios drawn from Central Mediterranean and offshore operations, making decisions at key moments and receiving operational debriefs on the reasoning behind each correct call.

There are no trick questions. Every scenario has a defensible best answer grounded in IAMSAR principles, maritime triage, and operational practice. Where multiple approaches have merit, the debrief explains why one takes precedence.

What you'll cover
  • Mass rescue coordination — overcrowded boat, Central Mediterranean
  • Cold-water casualty — Mediterranean winter recovery and management
Estimated time
15–20 minutes — depending on how many scenarios you run
Section 1 of 1
Before you start

Each scenario opens with a situational briefing — the incident type, your role, vessel conditions, and the key facts available to you at that moment. Read it carefully before beginning.

You'll make four sequential decisions within each scenario. Each decision reflects a real choice point — not a knowledge question but a command decision. After each choice, you receive an immediate debrief explaining the reasoning.

Difficulty levels
Scenarios are rated Moderate and High complexity. Start with Moderate if you are new to humanitarian SAR. Either order works — run them in any sequence and repeat as often as you like.
This is not a substitute for operational training
Scenario simulators develop situational awareness and decision-making instincts. They are not a replacement for drills, tabletop exercises, or the pre-deployment briefings your organisation provides. All operational decisions aboard must align with your vessel's SOPs and your team leader's guidance.
